Observing the Sun is now more affordable than ever!

This filter is designed to work with  the Skywatcher 102mm Refractor telescopes (e.g. Startravel-102, etc.) telescopes and we believe that it can be used with Celestron Omni (XLT) 102 telescopes and possibly with other similar refractor telescopes as well.
One of our customers kindly provided information about its compatibility with his ED80 DS PRO, too.

Re. compatibility with Celestron Nexstar 4 SE: one of our customers kindly reported that the inside rim that secures to the scope is just a little too small, so he had to fit 4 self-adhesive pads to the solar filter to give a snug fit ensuring it won’t fall off. So this sort of modification you'd have to do yourself if you would like to use it with a Nexstar 4 SE.

Please note, we can take no responsibility for any damage or injury caused by the solar filter falling off from the telescope during observation, this is fully your responsibility to make sure that the filter is secured safely and if necessary, please use a cellotape or packing tape to secure it, especially in windy weather or when there are children around.

Please measure your telescope and compare it with our specification at the bottom of the page. Please note, it might also work with Evostar-102, Evostar-100ED or even Equinox-100 PRO ED, but we haven't tried it with those.

These Solar Filters are made either with Baader Astro Solar™ Safety Film or Mylar. The Baader AstroSolar will provide a white light image whilst the view through the Mylar will be yellow-orange.

Enter the new millennium with the finest solar filters available. Astro Solar™ Safety Film is clear and homogenous and attains the optical performance of high quality plane-parallel glass filters—it is diffraction limited! Double-sided metal coatings have uniform density and good color balance across the entire field ensuring razor sharp images from edge to edge.

The Sun appears in its “real ”color —neutral white, not blue or orange ,and the sky adjacent to the solar limb is jet black.

You can see detail in sunspots, bright faculae near the limb and the mottled areas known as granules with these filters. The Sun offers constant changes and will keep your observing interesting and fun. Even small aperture telescopes can enjoy features of the Sun.

According to customer feedback and various reviews, the views through this filter can be further improved by adding either a green colour filter or a Baader Solar Continuum filter. The latter must be accompanied by a UV/IR cut-off filter for best results.

Basically, the best combination for white light solar observations is the Baader Astro Solar Safety film (used in this filter) plus Baader Solar Continuum filter plus Baader UV/IR Cut-off filter. Although I should mention that we cannot really call it anymore white lite solar observation as you will see a greenish image of the sun.

The Astro Solar™ film is completely safe and durable (won‘t break like glass if dropped). Its rating is ND-5 which means that the film transmits 1/100,000 of visible light (.001%) while reflecting (blocking) 99.999%of unwanted light. The film absorbs all ultraviolet rays while coating reflects infrared light rendering both absolutely harmless. For added assurance, Baader Astro Solar™ film has been declared safe for direct solar viewing by the German National Bureau of Standards for eye safety.

Mounted in a durable ABS or rubber cell that won‘t break.

It comes in a slip-in type housing and its outer diameter is appr. 112-113mm
(we supply this information in the case you want to use this item with a non-Skywatcher branded telescope. So, if the inner diameter of your telescope's front is the same (113-114mm) or similar, please use it but at your own risk only.)

Image is for demonstration only.

Please take maximum care when observing the Sun by using this type of solar filter. Check the surface before each observation and do not use it if it is damaged (e.g. punctures). Please make sure that strong wind would not blow away the filter. If necessary, use a cellotape or similar way of securing the filter to the telescope's tube. This is especially important if you have children around who might occasionally kick off the filter by mistake or clumsiness...!
We cannot take responsibility if any of the above occurs; please use it at your own risk!

Perfect tight fit for the Skywatcher Startravel 102 refractor.

Advantages: This is the first time I have tried solar astronomy and the results with this filter are astounding. The advantage of Baader Solar Film but in this perfect fit plastic mount which is a third of the cost of the Baader aluminium adjustable mount.

Disadvantages: Finding the sun! Yes - so efficient at blocking light that the background is totally black and makes locating the sun through the scope very difficult. Solution - about to order the Lacerta Solar Finder which also happens to have a Skywatcher compatible mount.
