This camera is the smaller brother of the popular ASI290MM. It comes in a smaller, lighter body with a 1.25" form factor, with USB2.0 connection instead of USB3.0, but other than that it would be a very good alternative for those who don't necessarily need the highest framerate that comes with SUB3.0 cameras and want to save a little bit of cash for some other astronomy gadget. But that's not the only reason why you would want to go for this product as you will see from further description of the product...

Due to its high sensitivity sensor, when combined with a wide field guide scope this camera will offer a good guiding solution.

It's a small sensor, so it will make a very good planetary imager, plus it can be used for high magnification solar and lunar imaging when not used for guiding. It might even be successfully used for taking images or really small deep sky objects, just don't forget that this is a monochrome camera...

We'd also recommend to read the product description of the high end (USB3.0) version of this camera for further details and comparison of features to get an idea which one would suit you better.

ZWO's first mini camera, the ZWO ASI290MM Mini camera integrates a Sony IMX290 1/3″ sensor (5.6 mm x 3.2 mm). This camera offers 1936 x 1096 pixels resolution with 2.9 μm x 2.9 μm pixel size. It provides 12bit ADC and its QE peak is over 80%.

Astrophotography Performance

The ASI290 Mini camera offers you very good performance for planetary imaging and guiding, plus it could be also use for some specific deep sky targets and high magnification lunar and solar work.

Low read noise, high dynamic range, QE peak above 80%, AR protective window and much more.

290Mini vs. 290MM

Compared with a ASI290MM camera, the ASI290Mini has smaller outlook, lighter weight, and parfocality can be achieved with an eyepiece (it can reach focus with eyepiece at the same position).

USB2.0Port & ST4 Port

USB 2.0 Port: Mini cameras have one USB2.0 type C port. USB Type C port is very popular among mobile phones, because of the symmetrical connector, i.e. it doens’t matter which side of the connetor is up

ST4 Port: Can connect mini camera directly to the auto guide port of mount.

Mechanical Drawing

What is in the box?

The ASI MINI camera box includes all necessary cables, drivers, adapters, and manual.

The ASI174 and ASI290 Mini cameras offer very beautiful looks, small size, light weight and good features, but this is not all...

We should consider much more…

How to choose a good guide camera?

Many people may say : it must be small, suitable for various equipments (guide scope, OAG), provide consistent performance.

ASI Mini cameras fit all these requirements very well.

So, what else should we care about?

There could be three potential requirenments: high sensitivity, precisely guiding, wide FOV.

High Sensitivity

Sensitivity is the first thing we considered. It is very important to find a guide star. So for start, we were considering to use only a mono sensor to design our guide camera, because a mono sensor has much higher sensitivity than color ones. After that, we carefully compared the sensitivity of our sensors. At last, we decide to use 290 and 174 mono sensor. As we know, 290 and 174 mono sensors have about 80% peak QE, so these can detect more stars in the field of view. Also, we can shorten the exposure time in guiding that might make guiding more precise.

Precise Guiding

The ASI290 MINI is designed for precisely guiding. 2.9um pixel size can give you a higher arcsec/pixel than 224 or 120 camera. Which means in same guide scope, 290mini can detect slighter movement of stars. ASI290 mini can improve about 30% guide precision than 120mm.

Wide FOV

The ASI174 MINI is designed for Big FOV guiding. This is very useful in OAG to looking for a guide star. When you using OAG guider to work with Ritchey-Chretien or Schmit-Cassegrain telescope, the hardest part is to looking for a guide star. ASI174 mini have 1/1.2″ big sensor which means you can have 4 times bigger Fov than 120mm.

Smiling Face

The back of an ASI mini camera is like a smiling face, it’s connector is Type C USB port, which is widely used in the latest mobile phones. And it’s nose is an ST4 port, that's for guiding. Every time, you use an ASI Mini camera, there will always be a smiling face with you in the darkness of the night.

Focus Like with an Eyepiece

ASI mini camera and eyepiece can reach focus at same position. You can focus with an eyepiece, and put ASI mini camera into 1.25″ holder.

Works on OAG

The ZWO ASI Mini camera is very suitable for OAG, it can have much biger focus range than normal ASI cameras. You will not have to worry about that your guide camera won't achieve focus with the main camera at same time.

The ZWO ASI290 Mini and ASI174 Mini cameras are coming soon to the UK! You can order it form us or our authorised dealers!

Wish you all clear skies!
