Observing the Sun is now more affordable than ever!

These filters are designed to work with  the Skywatcher Startravel-120 telescopes. We haven't tried it yet, but it might work with Skywatcher Evostar-120 and Celestron Omni XLT 120 R refractor telescopes and possibly with other similar refractor telescopes as well.

These Solar Filters are made with Baader Astro Solar™ Safety Film. Far superior than any existing glass, Mylar or polymer filters, they lead to sharper, brighter and images of higher contrast.

Enter the new millennium with the finest solar filters available. Astro Solar™ Safety Film is clear and homogenous and attains the optical performance of high quality plane-parallel glass filters—it is diffraction limited! Double-sided metal coatings have uniform density and good color balance across the entire field ensuring razor sharp images from edge to edge.

The Sun appears in its “real ”color —neutral white, not blue or orange ,and the sky adjacent to the solar limb is jet black.

You can see detail in sunspots, bright faculae near the limb and the mottled areas known as granules with these filters. The Sun offers constant changes and will keep your observing interesting and fun. Even small aperture telescopes can enjoy features of the Sun.

According to customer feedback and various reviews, the views through this filter can be further improved by adding either a green colour filter or a Baader Solar Continuum filter. The latter must be accompanied by a UV/IR cut-off filter for best results.

Basically, the best combination for white light solar observations is the Baader Astro Solar Safety film (used in this filter) plus Baader Solar Continuum filter plus Baader UV/IR Cut-off filter. Although I should mention that we cannot really call it anymore white lite solar observation as you will see a greenish image of the sun.

The Astro Solar™ film is completely safe and durable (won‘t break like glass if dropped). Its rating is ND-5 which means that the film transmits 1/100,000 of visible light (.001%) while reflecting (blocking) 99.999%of unwanted light. The film absorbs all ultraviolet rays while coating reflects infrared light rendering both absolutely harmless. For added assurance, Baader Astro Solar™ film has been declared safe for direct solar viewing by the German National Bureau of Standards for eye safety.

Mounted in a durable ABS or rubber cell that won‘t break.

The actual aperture of the filter is TBC.

So far we have had two different versions of this product.

version 1.

comes in a slip-over type housing and its inner diameter is 143-144 mm and outer diameter is 148 mm (we supply this information in the case you want to use this item with a non-Skywatcher branded telescope. So, if the outer diameter of your telescope is the same (142-143 mm) or similar, you'd be able to put this filter on it.
(Alternatively, if the inner diameter of your telescope's front is 148 mm or similar, please use it as a slip-in filter, but at your own risk only.)

version 2.
comes in a slip-in type housing and its outer diameter is 136-138 mm (we supply this information in the case you want to use this item with a non-Skywatcher branded telescope. So, if the inner diameter of your telescope is the same (137-138 mm) or similar, you'd be able to use this filter on it.
(Alternatively, if the outer diameter of your telescope's front is 133 mm or similar, please use it as a slip-over filter, but at your own risk only.)

You might find it useful to call us to check out which version we have at the moment!

SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT
Please take maximum care when observing the Sun by using this type of solar filter. Check the surface before each observation and do not use it if it is damaged (e.g. punctures). Please make sure that strong wind would not blow away the filter. If necessary, use a cellotape or similar way of securing the filter to the telescope's tube. This is especially important if you have children around who might occasionally kick off the filter by mistake or clumsiness...!
We cannot take responsibility if any of the above occurs; please use it at your own risk!
