Many spectacular objects of the Universe that we can photograph have large apparent size in the sky. Therefore, to record the best pictures, you need to have an instrument with a very wide flat field. This allows you to use cameras equipped with large sensors (like the modern DSLRs), obtaining also pinpoint stars to the edges of the image's field.

The Primaluce AIRY ED72 PHOTO is an apochromatic refractor with 72mm aperture, 430mm focal lenght (f6), FLP-51 apochromatic doublet, aluminum tube with 50,8mm Hybrid-Drive focuser with 1:11 fine focus, PLUS support rings (it also comes with photographic tripod adapter), 1x field flattener, AXIS adapter and it is also being supplied in a transport hard case.


The AIRY ED72 PHOTO apochromatic refractor offers all the features that come with the AIRY ED72,

plus we've added a 1x Dedicated Field Flattener with Axis Adapter and CNC machined tube rings as well for ultimate support.

Dedicated 1x field flattener with AXIS adapter

When you want to take pictures of wide field objects, we suggest to use cameras (such as cooled CCD or DSLR cameras) with large sensors. For example, to record the Pleiades (M45) with AIRY ED72 PHOTO (at 430mm focal length) we recommend a sensor with at least 20mm diagonal.

However, using these sensors, you must pay attention to field curvature, an optical effect that leads to the image distortion towards the edges of the field. For this reason we provide our AIRY telescope with the 1x dedicated field flattener and AXIS adapter: this instrument, directly threaded to the focuser before the camera, perfectly flatten the field even with large sensors (such as the APS-C size DSLR cameras that have approximately 23x16mm dimensions) allowing you to record perfect pictures! All without flexures thanks to AXIS adapter.

The 1x field flattener has, on camera side, a T2 thread (42x0,75 male) to connect CCD or DSLR cameras (the latter, with the T2 ring). This field flattener, to work at its best, needs you to place the camera's sensor at 55mm from the field flattener rear thread. For the DSLR, this distance is obtained adding, beetween the camera and the field flattener, a T2 ring. For CCD cameras, you need to use the right T2 extension rings to perfectly set this distance. If you don't know how to set it, you can contact us and we'll advice you with the best solution. Inside the AXIS adapter, you can also find a M48 thread to connect 50,8mm filters: in this way you can simply add a filter, for example for the light pollution reduction.

PLUS system support rings:

Forget about the uncomfortable and weak support rings that are often found in cheap telescopes! Our AIRY ED72 PHOTO apochromatic refractor comes standard with beautiful aluminum anodized support rings, made with high precision CNC machines, which are part of the PLUS (Prima Luce Universal System) system. This gives you maximum freedom in adapting the telescope to your request; at the same time, it has all the threaded holes, holes and slots suitable for connecting all the PLUS compatible elements, always with simple M6 screws.

For example, you can choose to install either a Losmandy or Vixen plate type, or you can use the holes in the upper part of the rings to install a telescope in parallel (through the guide rings PLUS compatible) or another dovetail plat equals to one located below the telescope (to position where you want guide rings or to allow the sliding Vixen + Losmandy dovetail clamp).

FPL-51 72mm apochromatic lens

The AIRY ED72 apochromatic refractor uses a doublet lens with FPL-51 element fully multi-coated that offers superior correction of chromatic aberration, compared to the classic achromatic refractor, but at a lower price than the FPL-53 models. For this reason, the AIRY ED72 apochromatic refractor is perfect for those customers looking for a  large diameter instrument but at an affordable price, very good for long-exposure astrophotography. It's also perfect for those who use monochrome CCD cameras with narrow-band filters for color images (the use of such filters cancels the small residual chromatic aberration and makes perfect the final image).

The short focal length (430mm) and the fast focal ratio (6) make it perfect for wide field astrophotography of many extended objects, which will be shown in their full extent also with cameras equipped with not too large sensors (and therefore not too expensive).

In order to maximize the quality of this apochromatic refractor using cameras with more than 15mm diagonal sensors (such as DSLRs), it can be used with the optional 1x field flattener which makes pinpoint stars up to image edges.

50.8mm Hybrid-Drive focuser

Often refractors are provided with Crayford focusers suitable for visual use but not for photo applications. In fact, during the long exposures required by astrophotography, this type of focuser can cause camera slippage moving the sensor out of focus. For this reason we have chosen to provide our AIRY ED72 telescopes with the new 50.8mm Hybrid-Drive focuser that adds, under the focuser tube, a rack and pinion thereby maintaining in position even heavy cameras (capacity of up 8 Kg). Below the focuser there's also a locking screw: tighten it and you can be sure that your camera will stay where it should be!

The 50.8mm Hybrid-Drive focuser presents the connection for 50.8mm and 31.8mm accessories (comes with a handy 31.8mm reducer). It also features a convenient 1:11 fine focus gear, particularly useful when you need to focus at high magnification.

The focuser has a very long ride (95mm) to allow the use of both photographic instruments (cameras with accessories) and visual (eyepieces and diagonals). For visual use, we recommend our 50.8mm XP dielectric diagonal for the observation of the sky or our XP 45° erect image prism for the one of terrestrial objects (use as a spotting scope).

Precision mechanical construction and 360° quality

You will be amazed of the mechanical quality of our AIRY ED72: full aluminum intubation made with precision CNC machine is rugged yet lightweight. All the components are treated at the highest levels to provide an instrument with which is a real pleasure to photograph or watch the sky! The aluminum front dew shield can be closed to make the telescope more transportable. The front cap is completely aluminum made. The focuser can be rotated freely through 360 degrees (without changing the focus point) to position the camera with the right angle and perfectly frame the object you want to record.

Below the optical tube there's a metal plate which allows installation on photographic tripods (perfect for use as a terrestrial spotting scope). This plate has the shape of a Vixen dovetail bar then the telescope can also be installed directly on mounts with this connection. For long exposure astrophotography use we suggest our 87mm PLUS system support rings. The AIRY ED72 refractor is an optics and mechanics jewel, and to carry it or keep it protected at best, it comes with a beautiful hard case.
