Portable / Mobile Tent for Astronomical Observations - Portable Observatory - Mark II

New version - now with pitch-roof design!

If you rent your place and thus cannot build a solid observatory dome or don't want to spend too much money on an observatory dome, or if you travel a lot to dark locations, here is the solution.

An affordable mobile observatory tent, that will give protection from breeze and wind, provide shelter for your electronic and electrical equipment (with limitations). (Please note, we cannot take responsibility for any damage caused by wind or rain...)

If you feel it's safe in your garden, you may even consider leaving some of your not too expensive equipment inside the tent, thus saving lot of time on preparations and setting ups. Please note, the tent is to be considered as a temporary shelter. Don't forget, it's not a house or an observatory dome, but also much cheaper.

It weighs a mere 4.5kg and can be set up by one person (not an easy option though), but of course very helpful if you have someone around.

It has an octagonal shape, which comes from the construction. The diameter at the ground level is about 260cm and at the top you have a round opening of about 200 cm diameters.

The top can be covered as you can see on the main picture. This new (mark II) version comes with two extra fiber glass poles that create a pitch-roof shape that is a big improvement in comparison to the original design as it helps to drive away the rain water. The cover is fixed by Velcro and bungee-clips, so if necessary it can be partially or fully opened or closed back quickly. The height is 150cm at the edge of the roof and appr. 180-185cm in the center.

This new design provides a slope for better protection from rain, but please note that the top cover that you see on the above picture will not provide complete protection from rain especially in strong wind as at the edges it is just few centimeters wider than the top of the tent. We would recommend to use an extra rainproof cover or other UV-proof cover (e.g. tarpaulin cover or similar) on top of it that the rain could run off from.

The whole advantage of this tent is in its shape when you use it for observations, but at the same time this shape gives a difficult task when there is a heavy rain. With a help of a little bit of common sense one may figure out the advantages and disadvantages of such a shape and will be able to deal with the task of creating the right shape of the roof that will protect his/her equipment from rain if necessary.

If you run electricity into the tent, PLEASE USE AN EXTENSION LEAD WITH SAFETY RCD FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY and keep it always switched off when the tent is not in use and especially when it's raining.

Otherwise please note that, although you may use the tent as long as you like, but just as most of the tents on the market, this has not been designed and manufactured to serve as a permanent shelter.

We used it for most of the year ourselves in England, but removed it for the coldest part of the year when there is most of the rain precipitating. In 9 months of continuous use we had only two occasions when we managed to flood the tent as the rain was so heavy for few days that the rainwater started building up on some shallow parts of the top, so we had to poor it off few times a day, but of course we couldn't do it overnight. Note that we had had the old version that didn't have a pitched roof design, although we've created something similar by leaving the well covered telescope inside in the middle of the tent.

As we have already mentioned above, this tent has been designed to provide temporary shelter against the elements, but mainly breeze and wind when observing. Otherwise it's up to your imagination how you use it; we gave you advise and warnings above ;o)
